Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

It is also reported in the authentic collections that he [peace and blessings be upon him] (1) said:

“None of you will enter Paradise by virtue of his deeds.”

They asked, “Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?”

He replied, “Not even me, unless Allah envelops me in mercy and grace from Him.” (2)

And in the hadith narrated by Abū Dāwūd and others:

“Were Allah to punish (3) the inhabitants of His heavens and the inhabitants (4) of His earth, He would punish them without being unjust to them; and were He to show them mercy, His mercy toward them would be better [for them] (5) than their deeds.” (6)

(1) “May Allah bless him and grant him peace” is added in A and B. (2) With some variation in wording, the hadith is narrated from Abū Hurayra and Ā'isha—may Allah be pleased with them both—and is found in al-Bukhārī, 7/121 (Book of the Sick, chapter: “The Sick Person’s Wish for Death”) and 8/98 (Book of Heart-Softening Admonitions, chapter: “Moderation and Constancy in Deeds”); Muslim, 4/2169–2171, in four places (Book of the Hypocrites, chapter: “No One Will Enter Paradise by Virtue of His Deeds”); Sunan Ibn Mājah, 2/1405 (Book of Asceticism, chapter: “Wariness Concerning One’s Deeds”); Sunan al-Dārimī, 2/305–306 (Book of Heart-Softening Admonitions, chapter: “No One’s Deeds Will Save Him”); and al-Musnad (al-Ma'ārif ed.), 12/192. (3) A and B read: “Indeed, were Allah to punish…” (4) N reads: “or the inhabitants of.” (5) N and M omit “for them,” reading: “better than.” (6) This hadith has been transmitted both as a marfū' report attributed to the Prophet and as a mawqūf report stopping at a Companion. It appears in al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 5/185, as a marfū' report from Zayd ibn Thābit—may Allah be pleased with him—with the following wording: “… Ibn al-Daylamī said: ‘Something concerning divine decree troubled me, so I went to Zayd ibn Thābit and questioned him. He replied: “I heard the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—say: ‘Were Allah to punish the inhabitants of His heavens and the inhabitants of His earth, He would punish them without wronging them. Were He to show them mercy, His mercy toward them would be better than their deeds. Even if you possessed Mount Uhud—or its equivalent—in gold and spent it in Allah’s cause, He would not accept it from you until you believed in divine decree and knew that what befell you could never have missed you, and what missed you could never have befallen you. If you died adhering to anything other than this, you would enter the Fire.’”’” The hadith also appears in Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 4/310–311 (Book of the Sunnah, chapter: “Divine Decree”), with the following wording: “… Ibn al-Daylamī said: ‘I went to Ubayy ibn Ka'b and said to him: “Something concerning divine decree has troubled me. Tell me something by which Allah might remove it from my heart.” He replied: “Were Allah to punish the inhabitants of His heavens … and if you died upon a belief other than this, you would enter the Fire.” He continued: “I then went to Abd Allah ibn Mas'ūd, who said the same. I next went to Hudhayfa ibn al-Yamān, who likewise said the same. I then went to Zayd ibn Thābit, who narrated the same to me from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”’” The hadith is also found in Sunan Ibn Mājah, 1/29–30 (Introduction, chapter: “Divine Decree”). Al-Albānī graded it authentic in Sahīh al-Jāmi' al-Saghīr, 1/57–58.
