and grant him peace, commands you to lead the people in prayer.’ Abū Bakr, who was a tender-hearted man, said, ‘O ‘Umar, lead the people in prayer.’
‘Umar replied, ‘You are more entitled to do so.’
She said: Abū Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, therefore led them in prayer during those days.
Then the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, felt somewhat better and came out for the noon prayer, supported between two men, one of whom was al-‘Abbās. Abū Bakr was leading the people in prayer. When Abū Bakr saw him, he began to step back, but the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, signalled to him not to step back and said to the two men, ‘Seat me beside him’ (1).
They seated him beside Abū Bakr. Abū Bakr prayed standing (2), following the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, while the people followed Abū Bakr’s prayer and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, remained seated.
‘Ubayd Allāh said: I then visited Ibn ‘Abbās and asked, ‘May I present to you ‘Ā’ishah’s account of the illness of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, as she related [it] (3) to me?’
He replied, ‘Go ahead.’ I recounted her report to him, and he disputed nothing in it, except that he asked, ‘Did she name for you the man who was with al-‘Abbās?’
I replied, ‘No.’
He said, ‘It was ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib.’” (4).
