Then Hamzah sprang towards them, cut off their humps (1), and slit (2) their flanks.” He then related the hadith (3) as recorded in al-Bukhārī (4). This was before intoxicants were prohibited.
As for al-Siddīq, may Allah be pleased with him, he is the foremost member of the Muslim community intended by every verse revealed in praise of those who spend in Allah’s cause, such as His words, Exalted is He:
“Those among you who spent and fought before the conquest are not equal to the others. They are greater in rank than those who spent and fought afterwards.” [Surah al-Hadīd: 10]
Abū Bakr is the best of these and the first among them.
Likewise, His words:
“Those who believed, emigrated, and strove in Allah’s cause with their wealth and their lives.” [Surah al-Tawbah: 20]
And His words:
“But the most righteous will be kept away from it—he who gives his wealth to purify himself.” [Surah al-Layl: 18]
Quran commentators such as Ibn Jarīr al-Tabarī, ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Hātim, and others reported, through chains of transmission from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr, Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab, and others, that this was revealed concerning Abū Bakr.
