feed them. Abū Bakr took three of them with him, as reported in the two Sahīh collections from ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Bakr (1), who said:
“The people of the Suffah were poor. Once, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: ‘Whoever has food for two should take a third person with him, and whoever has food for four should take a fifth and a sixth,’ or words to that effect. Abū Bakr took three with him, and the Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, took ten.” He then related the rest of the hadith (2).
Zayd ibn Aslam narrated from his father, who reported that ‘Umar said:
“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, instructed us to give charity. This happened at a time when I had some wealth, so I said to myself: ‘Today I shall outdo Abū Bakr, if I am ever to outdo him.’ I brought half my wealth, and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked: ‘What have you left for your family?’ I replied: ‘As much as this.’ Abū Bakr brought all the wealth he had, and he asked him: ‘Abū Bakr, what have you left for your family?’ He replied: ‘I have left them Allah and His Messenger.’ I then said: ‘I shall never compete with you in anything again.’”
This was narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī. Al-Tirmidhī said: “It is an authentic hadith” (3).
