to you, but you said, ‘You are lying,’ while Abū Bakr said, ‘You speak the truth’ (1). He supported me with his person and his wealth. Will you then leave my companion alone for my sake?” He said this twice (2).
Al-Bukhārī related from Ibn ‘Abbās, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came out during the illness from which he died, with a cloth wrapped around his head. He ascended the pulpit, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, ‘No one has been more generous to me with his wealth and his person than Abū Bakr ibn Abī Quhāfah. Were I to take an intimate friend…’” He then related the remainder of the hadith (3).
Ahmad related through Abū Mu‘āwiyah, from al-A‘mash, from Abū Sālih, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“No wealth has benefited me as much as Abū Bakr’s wealth.”
Abū Bakr then wept and said, “Are not I and my wealth entirely yours, O Messenger of Allah?” (4).
Al-Zuhrī related from Sa‘īd ibn al-Musayyab, who said that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“No Muslim’s wealth has been more beneficial to me than Abū Bakr’s wealth.”
From this wealth he freed Bilāl, and he would dispose of Abū Bakr’s wealth as a man disposes of his own.
