Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

(* In the Sunan collections, ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“There will be civil strife that will engulf the Arabs in destruction. Those killed in it will be in the Fire, and the tongue will be more devastating than the stroke of a sword.” *) (1) (2).

In the Sunan collections, Abū Hurayrah reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“There will be civil strife that is deaf, mute, and blind. Whoever exposes himself to it will be drawn into it, and engaging in it with one’s tongue will be like striking with the sword.” (3).

Umm Salamah reported:

“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, awoke one night and said: ‘Glory be to Allah! What treasures have been sent down, and what trials have been sent down!’” (4).

In the two Sahīh collections, Abū Hurayrah reported:

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him

(1) The passage between the two asterisks is omitted from (م). (2) This hadith is narrated from ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās, may Allah be pleased with them both, in Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 4:144 (Book of Tribulations and Battles, chapter on restraining the tongue); Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 3:320 (Book of Tribulations, chapter on what has been related about a man in times of civil strife)—al-Tirmidhī said, “This is a gharīb hadith”—Sunan Ibn Mājah, 2:1312 (Book of Tribulations, chapter on restraining the tongue during civil strife); and al-Musnad (al-Ma‘ārif edition), 11:189–192, hadith no. 6980. Shaykh Ahmad Shākir, may Allah have mercy on him, stated in his annotation: “Its chain of transmission is authentic … The expression ‘tastanzifu al-‘Arab’ (‘it engulfs the Arabs in destruction’) is written with the dotted letter zā’. Ibn al-Athīr said: ‘It means that it encompasses them all in destruction. One says istanzaftu al-shay’ (“I took the whole thing”) when one takes something in its entirety.’ The eminent scholar ‘Alī al-Qārī said … ‘Another interpretation is that it purges them of the base and those who foment civil strife.’” (3) This hadith is narrated from Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, in Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 4:143 (Book of Tribulations and Battles, chapter on restraining the tongue). In his annotation, the editor, may Allah have mercy on him, noted that the chain includes “‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn al-Baylamānī, whose hadith cannot be relied upon as evidence, as al-Mundhirī stated.” (4) This hadith, with differences in wording, is narrated from Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, in al-Bukhārī, 1:34 (Book of Knowledge, chapter on teaching and admonition at night); Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 3:330 (Book of Tribulations, chapter on what has been related: there will be tribulations like patches of dark night); and al-Musnad (al-Halabī edition), 5:289.
