fodder of leaves beaten from trees (1)—for four months.

Ibn Shihāb said: ʿUrwah (2) said: ʿĀ’ishah (3) said:

One day, while we were sitting in Abū Bakr’s house at midday, someone said to Abū Bakr (4): “Here is Allah’s Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—with his head covered (5), at an hour when he would not normally visit us.”

Abū Bakr said: “May my father and mother be sacrificed for him! By Allah, only an important matter could have brought him at this hour.”

She said: Allah’s Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—came and asked permission to enter. Abū Bakr gave him permission, and he entered. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said to Abū Bakr:

“Ask those with you to leave.”

Abū Bakr replied: “They are only your own family. May my father be sacrificed for you (6), O Messenger of Allah!”

He said: “I have been granted permission to leave.”

Abū Bakr asked: “May I accompany you (7), O Messenger of Allah?”

He replied: “Yes.”

Abū Bakr said: “Then take one of these two riding camels of mine. May my father be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah!”

Allah’s Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “I will pay for it.”

(1) Ibn Hajar said (Fath al-Bārī, 7/235): “His words waraqa al-samur (‘samur leaves’): samur is pronounced with a on the undotted sīn and u on the mīm. His words wa-huwa al-khabat (‘that is, leaves beaten from trees’) are also an interpolation in the report, belonging to al-Zuhrī’s explanation. Samur is said to be the Umm Ghaylān tree; alternatively, any tree providing dense shade; or the leaves of the talh tree. Khabat, pronounced with a on the khā’ and bā’, means leaves that fall when a tree is beaten with a stick, as Ibn Fāris stated.” (2) ن: qāla Ibn ‘Urwa (‘Ibn ‘Urwa said’). The reading retained in the text is that found in al-Bukhārī. (3) ‘Ā’isha is omitted in (س), (ب). (4) س, ب: li-abī (‘to my father’). (5) His words, ‘Here is Allah’s Messenger, mutaqanni‘an’: that is, with his head covered. (6) ن, م: bi-abī wa-ummī (‘May my father and mother be sacrificed for you…’). (7) Ibn Hajar said (Fath al-Bārī, 7/235): “Al-sahābata (‘companionship’) is in the accusative, meaning ‘I wish to accompany you.’ The nominative is also permissible, treating it as the predicate of an omitted subject.”
