Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

among the constituent portions (1) of its fruit is perpetual. Likewise, in the authentic hadith (2), he—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “The deed most beloved to Allah is that which is most constant.” (3) And Aisha [may Allah be pleased with her] (4) said: “His practice was constant.” (5) Thus, if a person’s practice is continuous, it does not follow that every part of it is continuous.

(1) The word “parts” is omitted from A and B. (2) N, M, and A read: “And likewise his statement in the hadith.” (3) The hadith is narrated from Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—in al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 6/51, with the wording: “The religious practice most beloved to Allah is that which its practitioner maintains consistently.” It begins: “Enough! Undertake only what you are able to do…” to the end of the hadith. Muslim devoted a chapter in his Sahīh, 1/540–541 (The Book of Travelers’ Prayer and Its Shortening, Chapter: The Virtue of Consistent Deeds, Including the Night Prayer and Other Deeds), to four hadiths, all narrated from Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—which convey the meaning of the hadith cited by Ibn Taymiyya. Among them is the Prophet’s statement—peace and blessings be upon him—: “The deeds most beloved to Allah are those performed most consistently, even if they are few.” Another hadith, narrated from Umm Salama—may Allah be pleased with her—is found in al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 6/319. Its wording is: “The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—did not die until he performed most of his prayers while seated, apart from the obligatory prayer. The deed most beloved to him was that which a servant maintained consistently, even if it was slight.” Al-Bukhārī included two hadiths from Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—that convey the same meaning, though their wording differs. The first is at 1/13 (The Book of Faith, Chapter: The Religious Practice Most Beloved to Allah Is That Which Is Most Consistent), with the wording: “The religious practice most beloved to him was that which its practitioner maintained consistently.” The second is at 3/38–39 (The Book of Fasting, Chapter: Fasting in Shaban), with the wording: “The prayer most beloved to the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—was that which he performed consistently, even if it was slight.” The hadith from Aisha is also found in Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 2/65 (The Book of Voluntary Prayer, Chapter: The Moderation Enjoined in Prayer). (4) “May Allah be pleased with her” is an addition in A and B. (5) The hadith from Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—is found in al-Bukhārī, 8/98 (The Book of Heart-Softening Reports, Chapter: Moderation and Consistency in Deeds). Its wording is: “Alqama reported: I asked the Mother of the Believers, Aisha, ‘Mother of the Believers, what was the Prophet’s practice like—did he single out particular days?’ She replied, ‘No. His practice was constant. Which of you could do what the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—was able to do?’” The hadith is also found in al-Bukhārī, 3/42 (The Book of Fasting, Chapter: Whether One Should Single Out Any Particular Deed); Muslim, 1/541 (The Book of Travelers’ Prayer, Chapter: The Virtue of Consistent Deeds…); Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 2/66 (The Book of Voluntary Prayer, Chapter: The Moderation Enjoined in Prayer); and al-Musnad (al-Halabī ed.), 6/43, 55, 189.
