Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

In the two Sahīh collections, Abū Wā’il reported:

“Sahl ibn Hunayf stood up on the day of Siffīn and said: ‘O people, distrust yourselves—or, in another wording, distrust your own judgment—in matters of your religion. We were [with the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—] (1) on the day of al-Hudaybiyah. Had we thought we should fight, we would have fought. This was during the peace agreement between the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and the polytheists. ‘Umar came (2) to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and said, “O Messenger of Allah, are we not following the truth while they follow falsehood?”

‘He replied, “Indeed.”

‘He asked, “Are not our slain in Paradise and theirs in the Fire?”

‘He replied, “Indeed.”

‘He asked, “Why, then, (3) should we accept humiliation in matters of our religion and return before Allah has judged between us and them?”

‘He replied, “O son of al-Khattāb, I am the Messenger of Allah, and Allah will never forsake me.”

‘Then ‘Umar left, but in his anger he could not wait, so he went to Abū Bakr and said, “O Abū Bakr, are we not following the truth while they follow falsehood?”

‘He replied, “Indeed.”

‘He asked, “Are not our slain in Paradise and theirs in the Fire?”

‘He replied, “Indeed.”

‘He asked, “Why, then, should we accept humiliation in matters of our religion and return before Allah has judged between us and them?”

‘He replied, “O son of al-Khattāb, he is the Messenger of Allah, and Allah will never forsake him.”

‘Then the Quran was revealed to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—announcing the victory, so he sent for ‘Umar
