Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

of greater standing than al-Musnadī, al-Bukhārī’s teacher; thus any additional material in his account is more firmly established than what appears in al-Bukhārī’s account.

In the two Sahīh collections, al-Barā’ ibn ‘Āzib reported:

“‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib (1) drew up the peace treaty between the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and the polytheists at al-Hudaybiyah. He wrote: ‘This is the agreement made by Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.’ They said, ‘Do not write “the Messenger of Allah.” If we knew that you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have fought you.’ The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said to ‘Alī, ‘Erase it.’ He replied, ‘I will not be the one to erase it.’ So the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—erased it with his own hand (2).

“Among the conditions they imposed on him was that they could enter and remain there (3) for three days, but could bring no weapons except cased arms. Shu‘bah said: I asked Abū Ishāq, ‘What are cased arms?’ He replied, ‘The case and what it contains.’” (4).

(4) This hadith is reported, with differences in wording, from al-Barā’ ibn ‘Āzib—may Allah be pleased with him—in al-Bukhārī, 3/184–185, Kitāb al-Sulh (Book of Reconciliation), Bāb Kayfa Yaktubu Hādhā Mā Sālaha Fulān ibn Fulān… (Chapter on How to Write: “This Is the Agreement Made by So-and-So, Son of So-and-So…”); 4/103–104, Kitāb al-Jizya wa-l-Muwāda‘a (Book of Jizya and Truces), Bāb al-Musālaha ‘alā Thalāthat Ayyām aw Waqt Ma‘lūm (Chapter on Concluding a Truce for Three Days or a Specified Period); Muslim, 3/1409–1411, Kitāb al-Jihād wa-l-Siyar (Book of Jihad and Military Campaigns), Bāb Sulh al-Hudaybiya fī al-Hudaybiya (Chapter on the Treaty of al-Hudaybiyah at al-Hudaybiyah); Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 2/227, Kitāb al-Manāsik (Book of Pilgrimage Rites), Bāb al-Muhrim Yahmilu al-Silāh (Chapter on a Person in Ihram Carrying Weapons); and al-Musnad (al-Halabī edition), 4/289, 291, 302. Al-Nawawī said in his commentary on Muslim, 12/136: “Abū Ishāq al-Sabī‘ī said: ‘Julubbān al-silāh (cased arms) means the case and its contents.’ Julubbān is pronounced with a u-vowel on the j. Al-Qādī said in al-Mashāriq: ‘We recorded its pronunciation as julubbān, with u-vowels on the j and l and a doubled, single-dotted b.’ He said: ‘This is how most transmitters narrated it, and Ibn Qutayba and others judged it correct. Some narrated it with no vowel on the l; al-Harawī likewise recorded this pronunciation, and both he and Thābit judged it correct. Thābit mentioned no other pronunciation.’ It is smaller than a jirāb (bag), made of leather, and holds a sword in its sheath. A rider also places his whip and equipment in it and hangs it from the saddle. The scholars said: ‘They stipulated this for two reasons: first, so that their entry would not appear to be that of victorious conquerors; and second, so that, if unrest or something similar arose, it would be difficult to prepare for action with their weapons.’”
