He said, “You treacherous fellow! Am I not working to remedy the harm caused by your treachery?” Al-Mughīrah had accompanied a group of people (1) during the pre-Islamic period, then killed them and taken their wealth. [He then came and embraced Islam] (2). The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “As for your Islam, I accept it; as for the wealth, I will have nothing to do with it.”
Then ʿUrwah began watching the Companions of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—closely (3). The narrator said: By Allah, whenever the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—spat out phlegm, it fell into the palm of one of them, who rubbed it over his face and skin. Whenever he gave them an order, they hastened to carry it out. Whenever he performed ablution, they almost fought over his ablution water. Whenever he spoke, they lowered their voices [in his presence] (4), and they would not look intently at him out of reverence for him.
ʿUrwah returned to his people and said, “My people, [by Allah] (5), I have visited kings, and I have visited Caesar, Chosroes and the Negus. By Allah, I have never seen a great king (6) whose companions revered him (7) as Muhammad’s Companions revere Muhammad. By Allah, whenever he spits out phlegm, it falls into the hand (8) of one of them, who rubs it over his face and skin. Whenever he gives them an order, they hasten to carry it out. Whenever he performs ablution, they almost fight over his ablution water. Whenever he speaks, they lower their voices in his presence (9).
