Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

and began speaking to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said much the same to him as he had said to Budayl.

At that, ʿUrwah said, “Muhammad, tell me: if you wipe out your own people (1), have I heard of any Arab (2) who destroyed his own kin (3) before you? And if things turn out otherwise, then, by Allah, I certainly see (4) faces, and I see a motley crowd (5) of people likely to flee and abandon you.” Ahmad’s wording is: “likely to flee and abandon you (6).”

Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—said [to him] (7), “Suck al-Lāt’s clitoris (8)! Would we flee from him and abandon him?”

He asked, “Who is that?”

They replied, “Abū Bakr.”

He said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, were it not for a favour you did me that I have not repaid, I would have answered you.”

He continued speaking to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and whenever he spoke to him, he took hold of his beard. Al-Mughīrah stood beside the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—with his sword, wearing a mail coif. Whenever ʿUrwah reached towards the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—he struck his hand with the metal tip (9) of the sword’s scabbard, saying, “Keep your hand away from the beard of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace!”

ʿUrwah raised his head (10) and asked, “Who is that (11)?”

They replied, “Al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah.”
