Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“We have not come to fight anyone; rather, we have come to perform ʿumrah. War has exhausted Quraysh and taken its toll on them. If they wish, I will agree to a truce with them for a specified period, provided they leave me free to deal with the people. If I prevail, they may, if they wish, embrace what the people have embraced; otherwise, they will have had a respite (1). But if they refuse, then, by Him in whose hand is my soul, I will certainly fight them for this cause of mine until I die, and Allah will surely fulfil (2) His purpose.”

Budayl said, “I will convey what you say to them.” He then set off and reached Quraysh. He said, “We have come to you from this man and have heard what he has to say. If you wish us to present it to you, we will.”

The foolish among them said, “We have no need for you to tell us anything about him.” But those among them with sound judgment said, “Tell us what you heard him say.”

He said, “I heard him say such and such,” and related to them what the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—had said.

Then ʿUrwah ibn Masʿūd stood up and said, “My people, are you not as a father to me?” (3)

They replied, “Yes.”

He said, “And am I not as a son to you (4)?”

They replied, “Yes.”

He said, “Do you suspect me of disloyalty?”

They replied, “No.”

He said, “Do you not know that I called upon the people of ʿUkāz to mobilize, and when they failed to respond (5), I came to you with my family, my children, and those who obeyed me?”

They replied, “Yes.”

He said, “This man has offered you a sound course of action. Accept it from him (6), and let me go to him.”

They said, “Go to him.” So he went to him.

(1) In the commentary on al-Bukhārī: “That is, they rested from the strain of war.” (2) (n), (m), (s), and al-Musnad: aw la-yunfidhānna (or … will surely carry out). (3) (n), (m), (s): bi-l-walad (as a son). (4) (n), (m), (s): bi-l-wālid (as a father). (5) Ballahū means “they were unable.” (6) Minhu (from him) is absent from al-Musnad and al-Bukhārī.
