“It is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then rose over the Throne. He knows what enters the earth and what emerges from it, what descends from heaven and what ascends into it. And He is with you wherever you are,” and the rest of the verse. [Surah al-Hadīd: 4] (1)
And His words:
“Have you not considered that Allah knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth? There is no private conversation among three but He is their fourth, nor among five but He is their sixth, nor among fewer or more than that but He is with them wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, Allah knows all things.” [Surah al-Mujādalah: 7]
This being with others applies generally to all who converse privately (2), just as the first applies generally to all creation.
Since He, glory be to Him, has stated concerning His being with others that He is the fourth of three and the sixth of five, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “What do you think of two whose third is Allah?” Because He was with them both, He was their third, as the Quran attests to the meaning of the authentic hadith, even though His being with them here is particular, whereas in those verses it is general.
As for His particular being with others, an example is His words, Most High, to Moses and Aaron:
“Do not fear. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see.” [Surah Tā Hā: 46]
This singles them out, as distinct from Pharaoh and his people: He is with Moses and Aaron, not with Pharaoh.
Likewise, when the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said to Abū Bakr:
“Do not grieve; indeed, Allah is with us.” (3)
He meant that Allah was with them, not with the polytheists who were hostile to them
