so he said (1), “Bring me out.” He came out between ‘Alī and al-‘Abbās, moved him aside (2) from his place facing the qiblah (direction of prayer), removed him from leading the prayer (3), and led the prayer himself (4).”

The Rāfidī said:
“Such is the state (5) of these people’s proofs (6). Afterwards, he asked the Companions to pardon him concerning his words and deeds, bade them farewell, and counselled them. He urged them to care for ‘Alī, al-Hasan, and al-Husayn—peace be upon them—and entrusted them to him. He descended from the pulpit, lay on his deathbed, and summoned ‘Alī—peace be upon him. He gave him instructions concerning every kind of matter, nourished him with knowledge, and enjoined him to endure patiently after his death whatever the people did to him. He mentioned the elders’ conduct and their opposition, and said: ‘Consider, until it was not by the sword among them—Allah—over the shedding of their blood in proportion to al-mahajja; for that would increase corruption among them. Fighting them would only increase hostility and bring about the decline of religion and Islam. Be a fortress and protection for him, his children, and his companions against tribulations and whatever comes from them. Do not be engaged in reforming the Muslims, orphans, and widows, and performing obligatory and voluntary acts of worship.’ Such is the state…” (6) ك (p. 202 م): “these people’s proofs.” (7) ك: “impartiality at what they did after him and how they tore away the veils of religion; and let him seek the truth.” م: “impartiality, and let him prefer following the truth.” (8) “In His Book” is omitted in (ن), (س), and (ب). (9) “To” is omitted in (ن), (س), and (ب).
