Even his father objected to this (1) and said, ‘Who has been appointed caliph over the people (2)?’ They replied, ‘Your son.’ He said, ‘And what became of the two men deemed weak?’—a reference to ‘Alī and al-‘Abbās (3). They replied, ‘They were occupied with preparing the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, for burial, and considered [that] (4) your son was the eldest [of the Companions.’ He said, ‘I am] older (5) than he is.’
Banū Hanīfah, as a whole, did not send (6) the zakat to him, until he called them apostates, killed them, and took them captive. ‘Umar objected (7) to his actions and returned the captives during his own caliphate.”
Before giving the response, it should first be said: Praise be to Allah, who has revealed enough about these brothers of the apostates to make it clear to everyone, learned and ordinary alike, that they truly are the brothers of the apostates. He has exposed their secrets and torn away their veils through their own words. For Allah continually witnesses acts of treachery on their part that reveal their enmity towards Allah, His Messenger, the best of Allah’s servants, and His righteous allies:
“If Allah wills to put someone to trial, you can do nothing for him against Allah.”
