but I feared that it would be made obligatory for you and that you would be unable to fulfill it.’ The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then passed away, with matters remaining as they were.” This took place during Ramadan (1).
“And Abū Dharr said: We fasted Ramadan with the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—but he did not lead us in night prayer at any time during the month until seven nights remained. He then led us in prayer until a third of the night had passed. On the sixth-to-last night, he did not lead us in prayer. On the fifth-to-last night, he led us in prayer until half the night had passed (2). I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, if only you would lead us in more prayer tonight!’ He replied, ‘When a person prays with the imam until the imam finishes, it is counted for him as having prayed the entire night.’
“On the fourth-to-last night, he did not lead us in prayer. When the [third]-to-last night (3) came, he gathered his family and his wives and led us in prayer until we feared that we would miss al-falāh (success). I asked, ‘What is al-falāh?’ He replied, ‘The pre-dawn meal.’ Then he did not lead us in prayer for the remainder of the month.” Reported by Ahmad, al-Tirmidhī, al-Nasā’ī, and Abū Dāwūd (4).
