Several groups have erred concerning these hadiths:
One group rejected them, citing as evidence (1) the hadith narrated by Ibn Mājah in which the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“There is no Mahdī except Jesus, son of Mary.”
This hadith is weak. Abū Muhammad ibn al-Walīd al-Baghdādī and others relied upon it, although it is not a report that can be relied upon. Ibn Mājah narrated it from Yūnus, from al-Shāfi‘ī, who narrated it from a man from Yemen named Muhammad ibn Khālid al-Janadī, whose reports cannot be cited as evidence (2). This hadith is not in al-Shāfi‘ī’s Musnad. It has also been said that al-Shāfi‘ī did not hear it from al-Janadī and that Yūnus did not hear it from al-Shāfi‘ī.
Second: As for the Twelvers who claimed that this was their Mahdī, their Mahdī is named Muhammad ibn al-Hasan. Yet the Mahdī whose attributes are specified (3), whom the Prophet described—may

(2) The hadith appears in Sunan Ibn Mājah, 2:1340–1341 (Book of Tribulations, Chapter on the Severity of the Times), with the following wording: “Yūnus ibn ‘Abd al-A‘lā narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Idrīs al-Shāfi‘ī narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Khālid al-Janadī narrated to me, from Abān ibn Sālih, from al-Hasan, from Anas ibn Mālik, that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: ‘Matters will only grow more difficult, the world will only decline, and people will only grow more avaricious. The Hour will not come upon the worst of people, and there is no Mahdī except Jesus, son of Mary.’” The editor—may Allah have mercy on him—discussed the hadith in terms indicating that he considered it authentic. Al-Albānī disagreed in Silsilat al-Ahādīth al-Da‘īfa, no. 77, 1:103–105, stating that it is a munkar hadith and that al-Hākim included it, 4:441, as did Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr in Jāmi‘ Bayān al-‘Ilm, 1:155. He noted that Muhammad ibn Khālid al-Janadī is majhūl (unknown as a narrator), as the hadith master (Ibn Hajar) stated in al-Taqrīb, and that al-Dhahabī described it in al-Mīzān as a munkar report. He then said: “Al-Saghānī said: ‘Fabricated,’ as cited in al-Shawkānī’s al-Ahādīth al-Mawdū‘a, p. 195. In al-‘Urf al-Wardī fī Akhbār al-Mahdī, in al-Hāwī, 2:274, al-Suyūtī quoted al-Qurtubī as saying in al-Tadhkira: ‘A weak chain of transmission.’ … The hadith master also indicated in al-Fath … that this hadith should be rejected because it contradicts the hadiths concerning the Mahdī.”
