It also states that the Prophet was in pain and that Abū Sa‘īd heard the sun’s sound (1) as it rose, like the creaking (2) of a pulley. This is rationally untenable, and those others did not mention it. Had such a hadith genuinely come from Abū Sa‘īd—given his love for ‘Alī and his narration of ‘Alī’s virtues—his well-known students would have transmitted it from him, just as they transmitted other reports concerning ‘Alī’s virtues. These include Abū Sa‘īd’s report that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, when mentioning the Khārijites:
“The group closer to the truth of the two will kill them.” (3)
Another is his report that the Prophet said to ‘Ammār:
“The rebellious group will kill you.” (4)
In authentic hadiths such as these, transmitted by Abū Sa‘īd, the Prophet made clear that ‘Alī and his companions were closer to the truth than Mu‘āwiya and his companions. How, then, could a report like this not have been transmitted from Abū Sa‘īd had it been authentic?!
Neither al-Husayn, nor his brother ‘Umar, nor ‘Alī narrated anything like this. Had the two known such a report, it would have been transmitted (5) from them both (6) by those known (7) to narrate from them both, for this is a momentous matter.
