Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

‘Alī ibn al-Husayn, from Fātimah bint ‘Alī, from Asmā’ bint ‘Umays … the hadith.

I say (1): The scholars’ statements concerning Husayn al-Ashqar have already been presented. Even if all the narrators in the chain were trustworthy and the chain were uninterrupted, nothing could be established through his narration. How, then, could it be when these conditions have not been established?

Concerning ‘Alī ibn Hāshim ibn al-Barīd, al-Bukhārī said: “He and his father are both extremists in their creed.” Ibn Hibbān said: “He was extreme in his Shi‘ism and narrated objectionable reports from well-known narrators” (2). The fact that hadith scholars (3) included reports from him which they knew through other chains does not mean that reports he alone transmitted must be accepted as established.

It is remarkable that this compiler attributed this chain and the following one to the narration of Fātimah bint al-Husayn. Yet this is Fātimah bint ‘Alī, not the daughter of al-Husayn.

Similarly, (* he mentioned a third chain from her, transmitted by ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Sharīk: My father narrated to us, from ‘Urwah ibn ‘Abd Allāh, from Fātimah, daughter of *) (4) ‘Alī, from Asmā’, from ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib:

“He was brought (5) to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—while revelation was coming to him, and he covered him with his garment. He remained like that until the sun receded—that is, it set or was about to set. Then the state of receiving revelation passed from Allah’s Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and he said, ‘Have you prayed, ‘Alī?’ He replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘O Allah, bring the sun back for ‘Alī.’ The sun returned, shining as far as the middle of the mosque.”
