al-‘Uqaylī: “He transmits rejected reports on the authority of trustworthy narrators.” Al-Rāzī said: “He used to fabricate false hadiths.” Ibn ‘Adī said: “His hadith is abandoned” (1).

The first chain comes through ‘Ubayd Allāh ibn Mūsā al-‘Absī (2). In some of its versions, he narrates “from Fudayl,” while in others he says, “He narrated to us” (3). If it is not established that he said, “He narrated to us” (4), then he may not have heard it directly. For he was among those who advocated Shiism and were eager to collect hadiths supporting it. He used to transmit hadiths on this subject from liars and was well known for doing so. Although they described him as trustworthy and said that he

(1) For the biography of ‘Ammār ibn Matar, known as Abū ‘Uthmān al-Rahāwī, see Mīzān al-I‘tidāl, 3:169–170, and Lisān al-Mīzān, 4:275–276. After citing the hadith concerning the sun’s return through his chain of transmission, Ibn Hajar said: “Ibn Hishām narrated from Ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: ‘The sun was never returned except for Joshua son of Nun.’” Al-Dhahabī said of ‘Ammār ibn Matar, as quoted by Ibn Hajar: “He is hālik (utterly unreliable), although some declared him trustworthy, and some described him as skilled in hadith memorization.” Al-Dhahabī also said: “Ibn Hibbān said: ‘He used to steal hadiths.’ Al-‘Uqaylī said: ‘He transmits unacceptable reports on the authority of trustworthy narrators.’” Abū Hātim al-Rāzī stated in al-Jarh wa-l-Ta‘dīl, vol. [0 - 9], part 1, p. 394—as quoted by al-Dhahabī and Ibn Hajar—“He used to lie.” (2) All manuscripts read: “‘Abd Allāh ibn Mūsā al-‘Ansī” (undotted in (m)). The correct reading is the one I have adopted. The name appeared in the same form a few pages earlier (175–176). He is ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mūsā ibn Abī al-Mukhtār, whose name was Bādhām, al-‘Absī. See his biography in Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb, 7:53, which states: “Ibn Sa‘d said: ‘He died in Dhū al-Qa‘da in the year 213.’ … Al-Hākim said: ‘I heard Qāsim ibn Qāsim al-Sayyārī say: I heard Abū Muslim al-Baghdādī, the hadith scholar, say: “ ‘Ubayd Allāh ibn Mūsā is among those whose reports are abandoned; Ahmad abandoned his reports because of his Shi‘i inclinations.”’ … Ibn Qāni‘ said: ‘He was a righteous Kūfan with Shi‘i inclinations.’ Al-Sājī said: ‘He was excessive in his Shi‘i inclinations.’” Al-Dhahabī said of him in Mīzān al-I‘tidāl, 3:16: “… Abū Dāwūd said: ‘He was an ardent Shi‘i.’” (3) n, m: hadīthunā (our hadith); this is a textual corruption. (4) n, m: hadīthan (a hadith).
