Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

ibn Mūsā al-‘Absī. Al-Tahāwī narrated it through him, with the following wording:

‘The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was receiving revelation with his head in ‘Alī’s lap, and ‘Alī did not perform the ‘Asr prayer until the sun had set.’

He also related it from the report of ‘Ammār ibn Matar, from Fudayl (* ibn Marzūq, through Abū Ja‘far al-‘Uqaylī, author of al-Du‘afā’ (Weak Narrators).”

I say: This wording contradicts the first, which states that he slept in his lap *) (1) from the ‘Asr prayer until sunset, and that this occurred at al-Sahbā’ during the expedition to Khaybar. The second states that he was awake, receiving revelation from Gabriel, with his head in ‘Alī’s lap until the sun had set. This contradiction indicates that the report has not been reliably transmitted: one version explicitly states (2) that he was asleep during this time, while the other says that he was awake and receiving revelation. Both are false, for sleeping after ‘Asr is disliked and prohibited, and the Prophet’s—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—eyes sleep, but his heart does not. How, then, could ‘Alī miss the ‘Asr prayer?

Moreover, allowing the prayer’s prescribed time to pass for such a reason is either permissible or impermissible (3). If it is permissible, ‘Alī would incur no sin by performing ‘Asr after sunset. ‘Alī is not superior to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—missed the ‘Asr prayer on the day of the Battle of the Trench until the sun had set. He then performed it, and the sun was not brought back for him. Nor was it brought back for Solomon when it disappeared behind the veil.
