Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

name was Amr—[such as Amr] (1) ibn Abd Wudd—and Abū Jahl’s name was Amr ibn Hishām. (2 Among the Companions was Khālid ibn Saīd ibn al-Ās, one of the earliest converts, while among the polytheists was Khālid ibn Sufyān al-Hudhalī 2) (2). Among the Companions were men named Hishām, such as Hishām ibn Hakīm; and Abū Jahl’s father was named Hishām. Among the Companions were men named Uqba, such as Abū Masūd, Uqba ibn Amr al-Badrī, and Uqba ibn Āmir al-Juhanī (3).

Among the polytheists was Uqba ibn Abī Muayt. Among the Companions were Alī and Uthmān (4), while among the polytheists were men bearing these names, such as Alī ibn Umayya ibn Khalaf, who was killed at Badr as an unbeliever, and Uthmān ibn [Abī] Talha, who was killed before becoming Muslim (5). There are many such examples.

Thus, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and the believers did not dislike any name merely because an unbeliever had borne it. So if (6) it were assumed that those bearing these

(1) The words in square brackets are an addition in M. (2) The passage between the two (2) markers is omitted from N and M. (3) N and M read: “Among the Companions was one named ʿUqba, such as Ibn ʿĀmir, Abū Masʿūd al-Badrī” (without mentioning ʿUqba ibn ʿĀmir al-Juhanī). The correct reading is the one I adopted from A and B. The former is ʿUqba ibn ʿAmr ibn Thaʿlaba al-Ansārī, Abū Masʿūd al-Badrī. Ibn Hajar considered it most likely that he died after 40 AH. See *al-Isāba fī Tamyīz al-Sahāba*, 2:483–484, Cairo, 1358/1939. The latter is ʿUqba ibn ʿĀmir ibn ʿĪsā ibn Juhayna al-Juhanī, who died in 58 AH during the caliphate of Muʿāwiya. See *al-Isāba*, 2:482; al-Khazrajī, *al-Khulāsa*, p. 226. (4) M reads: “ʿAlī and ʿUmar,” which is incorrect. (5) M reads: “such as ʿUmar ibn Talha, who was killed before becoming Muslim.” The other three manuscripts read “ʿUthmān ibn Talha,” which is also incorrect. The correct reading is the one adopted in the text. ʿUthmān ibn Talha embraced Islam during the truce of al-Hudaybiya and emigrated before the Conquest together with Khālid ibn al-Walīd (*Sīrat Ibn Hishām*, 2:113). As for ʿUthmān ibn Abī Talha, he was killed as an unbeliever by Hamza ibn ʿAbd al-Muttalib—may Allah be pleased with him—at the Battle of Uhud (Ibn Hishām, 3:134). (6) M reads: *wa-law* (“and if”).
