Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

The sun was brought back for him when he had missed
The time for prayer, and it had drawn near to setting;
Its light shone forth at the time for the afternoon prayer,
Then it plunged down like a falling star.
For him it was brought back once more at Babylon,
Though never brought back for any articulate being (1).”

The response is as follows:

‘Alī’s virtue, his closeness to Allah, and his exalted standing with Allah are known (2), praise be to Allah, through reliably established reports that give us certain knowledge. These leave us with no need for falsehoods or reports whose truth is unknown. The hadith about the sun being brought back for him has been mentioned by a number of scholars, including al-Tahāwī, al-Qādī ‘Iyād, and others, who counted it among the miracles of the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. However, discerning scholars well versed in hadith know that this hadith is a fabricated lie, as Ibn al-Jawzī stated in his book Al-Mawdū‘āt (Fabricated Reports) (3).

He related it from Abū Ja‘far al-‘Uqaylī’s book on weak narrators, through ‘Ubayd Allah (4) ibn Mūsā, from Fudayl ibn Marzūq, from Ibrāhīm ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan (5), from Fātimah bint al-Husayn, from Asmā’ bint ‘Umays, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was receiving revelation with his head in ‘Alī’s lap, and ‘Alī did not perform the afternoon prayer before the sun had set. (* The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, ‘Have you prayed, ‘Alī?’ He replied, ‘No.’ *) (6). Then the Messenger of Allah said

(1) (n), (s), (b): “mughrib.” In (k), these verses are followed by a fourth: “Except for Joshua, or for him afterward; And the interpretation of its return is a wondrous matter.” (2) (s), (b): “with Allah is known with Allah.” (3) (3) 1:355–357. (4) (m), al-Mawdū‘āt (Fabricated Reports): “ʿAbd Allāh,” which is incorrect. It will appear below as recorded here. (5) (n), (m): “ibn al-Hasan ibn Hasan”; al-Mawdū‘āt: “ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn.” The second “ibn al-Hasan” is omitted from (b). (6) The passage between the two asterisks is omitted from al-Mawdū‘āt but appears in Tanzīh al-Sharī‘a (Purifying the Sharia), al-La’āli’ al-Masnū‘a (Fabricated Pearls), and al-Fawā’id al-Majmū‘a (Collected Benefits).
