Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

the road (1), and night overtook him near (2) a rugged valley. Gabriel descended and informed him that (3) a group of unbelieving jinn had entered the valley, intending to plot against him and harm his Companions. He summoned ‘Alī, invoked protection for him, and ordered him (4) to descend into the valley, where he killed them.’”

The response is, first: ‘Alī is of far greater standing than this. Destroying jinn has been accomplished by those of lesser standing than ‘Alī. Nevertheless, according to hadith experts, this report is among those falsely attributed to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and to ‘Alī. Nothing of this sort occurred during the expedition against Banū al-Mustaliq.

As for his statement, “The majority have narrated this”: if he means that it has been transmitted through a sound chain of narration, or appears in a book whose mere inclusion of a report warrants reliance upon it, or has been authenticated by someone whose authentication is accepted, then that is not the case.

If he means [that] (5) the majority of scholars narrated it, this is a lie. If he means that it was narrated by someone whose narration does not constitute evidence, then this is of no benefit.

Of the same kind is the report that he fought the jinn in the well of Dhāt al-Alam. This is a fabricated hadith according to the experts.
