and perform ablution to remove ritual impurity. When we leave it behind, grant no one else a share of it.”
He said:
We had gone only a short distance when we came upon a well overflowing with rainwater.
He continued:
We stopped and drank our fill (1), and I filled my waterskin (2). Then I left it behind, saying, “I shall see whether his supplication has been answered.” We travelled a mile or so, and I told my companions, “I have forgotten my waterskin (3).” I returned to that place, and it was as though there had never been any water there. I retrieved my waterskin (4).
When I reached Dārīn, with the sea separating us from them, he supplicated to Allah, saying:
“O Allah, O All-Knowing, O All-Wise, O Most High, O Magnificent, we are Your servants, fighting Your enemy in Your cause. Open a way for us to reach Your enemy.”
Then he led us (5) into the sea. By Allah, our saddles did not even become wet! We crossed over to them. On our return, he suffered abdominal pain and died. We could find no water to wash him, so we wrapped him in his clothes and buried him. We had travelled only a short distance when we came upon abundant water. Some said to the others, “Go back so that we can exhume him and wash him.” We returned, but his grave was hidden from us, and we could not find it.
A man among the group said:
“I heard him supplicating to Allah, saying, ‘O Allah, O All-Knowing, O All-Wise, O Most High, O Magnificent, conceal my grave and let no one see my private parts.’”
So we turned back and left him there (6).
ʿUmar also made supplications that were answered. Among them was his supplication when Bilāl and a group with him disputed with him over the distribution—the distribution of land. He said:
“O Allah, deal with Bilāl and his companions on my behalf.”
Before a year had passed, not one of them remained alive (7).
