Hurayth (1), as the tenth of ten, with his (2) stake being the shortest of them all. He showed him the palm tree on which he would be crucified (3), and it happened just as he had foretold.
He told Rushayd al-Hajarī (4) that his hands and feet would be cut off, that he would be crucified, and that his tongue would be cut out. And so it happened (5).
He told Kumayl ibn Ziyād (6) that al-Hajjāj would kill him (7), and that al-Hajjāj would slit Qanbar’s throat. And so it happened.
(1) M, K: ‘Umar ibn Hurayth; this is an error. He is Abū Sa‘īd ‘Amr ibn Hurayth ibn ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthmān al-Makhzūmī al-Qurashī—may Allah be pleased with him. He governed Kufa on behalf of Ziyād and then his son ‘Ubayd Allāh, and died there. Eighteen hadiths are transmitted from him. He was born two years before the Hijra and died in 85 AH. See his biography in al-Isāba, 2/524; al-A‘lām, 5/243–244.
(2) K: huwa (“he”).
(3) The two words allatī yuslabu (“on which he would be crucified”) are not clearly visible in K.
(4) N, M: Rushdan al-Hajarī; S: Rushdan al-Bahrī; B: Rāshidan al-Bahrī. The correct reading is the one I have adopted from K. Al-Tūsī mentions him in Rijāl al-Tūsī, p. 73, without providing any information about him. Al-Kashshī mentions him in al-Rijāl, pp. 71–73, relating reports of his crucifixion and the cutting off of his hands and feet. Al-Dhahabī mentions him in Mīzān al-I‘tidāl, 2/51–52, saying: “Al-Jūzajānī said: ‘A liar, not trustworthy.’ Ibn Hibbān said: ‘Rushayd al-Hajarī was a Kufan who believed in al-raj‘a (the return of the dead to earthly life).’” He also relates that Ziyād cut out his tongue and crucified him at the entrance to ‘Amr ibn Hurayth’s house. See also what Muhibb al-Dīn al-Khatīb writes about him in al-Muntaqā, p. 520.
(5) K: fa-waqa‘a kadhālika (“and it happened just so”).
(6) B: Kuhayl ibn Ziyād; this is an error. He is Kumayl ibn Ziyād ibn Nahīk, a trustworthy Successor and an associate of ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah be pleased with him. He was born in 12 AH and was killed by al-Hajjāj in 82 AH. See his biography in Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb, 8/447–448; Shadharāt al-Dhahab, 1/91; al-A‘lām, 6/93. See also the reports about Kumayl ibn Ziyād that al-Khatīb quotes from Tārīkh al-Tabarī, including the account that he was among those said to have intended to assassinate ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān—may Allah be pleased with him.
(7) K: bi-anna al-Hajjāja yaqtuluhu fa-waqa‘a (“that al-Hajjāj would kill him, and it happened”).
