cross.’ Then someone else reported the same to him, and he said: ‘They have not (1) crossed; by Allah, this is where they will meet their deaths.’ And so it was.
He foretold that his own noble life would be taken.
He told Shahrabān that the accursed man would cut off his hands and feet and crucify him (2), and Mu‘āwiyah did this to him.
He told Maytham al-Tammār (3) that he would be crucified at the gate of the house of ‘Amr ibn
(1) B alone: lan (“will not”).
(2) N, M, S: “He foretold that the accursed Shahrabān would cut off his hands and feet and crucify him” (S uses bi-anna rather than anna, both meaning “that”). B: “He foretold that the accursed Shahrabān would have his hands and feet cut off and be crucified.” K: “He—peace be upon him—told Juwayriya ibn Mus-hir that the accursed man would cut off his hands and feet and crucify [him].” I hope that the reading I have given is correct. I found that al-Kashshī mentions Juwayriya ibn Mus-hir al-‘Abdī in his Rijāl, p. 98, Karbala edition, undated. The annotator, al-Sayyid Ahmad al-Husaynī, states: “Juwayriya is pronounced with u on the jīm, a on the wāw, no vowel on the first yā’, i on the rā’, and a on the second yā’, followed by hā’. Mus-hir is pronounced with u on the mīm, no vowel on the sīn, and i on the hā’. Al-‘Abdī denotes affiliation with Banū al-‘Ubayd; Banū al-‘Ubayd, with ‘Ubayd in the diminutive form, are a branch of Banū ‘Adī ibn Khabbāb ibn Qudā‘a.” Most likely, by “the accursed man,” Ibn al-Mutahhar means Mu‘āwiya—may Allah be pleased with him. Ibn Hajar also mentions him in Lisān al-Mīzān, 2/18, saying: “And he said: ‘He transmitted from ‘Alī, and al-Hasan ibn Mahbūb and Jābir ibn al-Hurr transmitted from him.’” Al-Tūsī likewise mentions him in Rijāl al-Tūsī, p. 37, stating: “Juwayriya ibn Mus-hir: an Arab from Kufa.”
(3) N, S: Mismār al-Tammār; M: Mismar al-Tammār; B: Mismāran al-Tammār; K: Mītam al-Tammār. Al-Kashshī mentions him in al-Rijāl, pp. 74–81, and relates reports concerning his crucifixion. The annotator states that he was killed ten days before al-Husayn’s arrival in Iraq. Ibn Hajar mentions him in al-Isāba, 3/479, relating reports concerning the Messenger’s naming of him—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—without indicating their degree of authenticity. He also states that he was the first person in Islam to be gagged. Al-Ziriklī reproduces most of Ibn Hajar’s account in al-A‘lām, 8/294, and dates his killing to 60 AH. Al-Tūsī mentions him in Rijāl al-Tūsī, p. 79, where the annotator states: “Maytham ibn Yahyā, or ‘Abd Allāh, al-Tammār al-Nahrawānī: his standing is too well known to require mention. He was killed ten days before al-Husayn (‘a) arrived in Iraq and was crucified after his tongue had been cut off.”
