and placed al-Zubayr in command of the right flank (1), and put Abū ‘Ubaydah in charge of the infantry (2) and the valley floor. He said, ‘Abū Hurayrah, summon the Ansār for me.’ They came (3) running, and he said, ‘People of the Ansār, do you see the rabble of Quraysh?’ They replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘When you encounter them tomorrow, make sure you mow them down.’ He made a sweeping gesture (4) with his hand, placed his right hand over his left, and said, ‘Your meeting place is al-Safā.’ No one appeared [before them] (5) that day without their striking him dead (6).

He continued: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then ascended al-Safā, and the Ansār came and gathered around it. Abū Sufyān came and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, the bulk of Quraysh has been wiped out! There will be no Quraysh after today!’ The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, ‘Whoever enters Abū Sufyān’s house is safe; whoever lays down his weapons is safe; and whoever closes his door is safe.’”

In the two Sahīh collections (7), ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr is reported to have said: “When the Messenger of

(1) Al-mujannibatān (the two flanks) are the right and left wings, with the centre between them. (2) (N), (M), (S): al-sāqa (the rearguard). The reading adopted is from (B) and also appears in Muslim. The commentary states: “‘In command of the bayādhiqa’: these are foot soldiers. The word is Persian, naturalized into Arabic. … It is said that they were so named because of their agility and speed of movement.” (3) Muslim: “So I summoned them, and they came …” (4) (N), (M), (S): wa-akfā. The reading adopted is from (B). Muslim reads akhfā, as does al-Nawawī’s commentary on Muslim, 12/132 (though al-Nawawī does not explain it). Ibn al-Athīr states in al-Nihāya fī gharīb al-hadīth: “Another occurrence is in the hadith of the conquest: ‘You are to mow them down,’ followed by ahfā bi-yadihi (‘he tilted his hand’), meaning that he inclined it to illustrate reaping and the thoroughness of the killing.” (5) Lahum (“before them”): found only in (B); it also appears in Muslim. (6) Al-Nawawī, 12/132, states: “That is, no one appeared before them without their killing him, so that he fell to the ground. Alternatively, it may mean that they rendered him motionless by killing him, like someone asleep.” (7) “And in the two Sahīh collections”: this is the reading in all manuscripts. I have not found the hadith in Muslim. It appears in al-Bukhārī, 5/146–147 (Book of Military Campaigns, chapter on where the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—planted the banner on the day of the conquest). It is transmitted from Hishām, from his father. Ibn Hajar states in Fath al-Bārī, 8/6: “From Hishām (who is Ibn ‘Urwa), from his father … He presents it here as mursal (with a disconnected chain), and I have not seen it transmitted from ‘Urwa with a connected chain through any of its routes. Al-Bukhārī’s purpose in citing it is the point indicated by his chapter heading, namely the final part of the hadith. That part is transmitted with a connected chain from ‘Urwa, from Nāfi‘ ibn Jubayr ibn Mut‘im, from al-‘Abbās ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib and al-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwām.”
