There is also his statement that, when Amr was killed, the polytheists and the Jews were routed (1).
This is a blatant lie. The polytheists and the Jews continued to besiege the Muslims (2) after that, until Nuaym ibn Masūd sowed discord between them and Allah sent against them the fierce wind—the east wind—and the angels from heaven. As Allah Most High says:
“O you who believe, remember Allah’s favor upon you when hosts came against you. We sent against them a wind and hosts that you could not see—and Allah sees all that you do. When they came upon you from above and from below, when eyes shifted and hearts reached the throats, and you entertained all manner of thoughts about Allah, there the believers were tested and shaken violently. And when the hypocrites and those with sickness in their hearts said, ‘What Allah and His Messenger promised us was nothing but delusion.’”
[Surah al-Ahzāb: 9–12]
up to His words:
“And Allah spared the believers from fighting.”
[Surah al-Ahzāb: 25]
This demonstrates that the believers did not fight in that campaign and that Allah did not drive back the polytheists through fighting. This is well established by mass transmission among scholars versed in hadith, Quranic exegesis, accounts of the military campaigns, prophetic biography, and history.
How, then, can it be claimed that the polytheists were routed because Ali and Amr ibn Abd Wudd fought one another and Ali killed him (3)?
The hadith he cited from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—in which he said:
“Ali’s killing of Amr ibn Abd Wudd is better than the worship of humankind and jinn”
