Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said when the enemy closed in upon him:

‘Who will be the man (1) to give his life for us?’

… Then Ziyād ibn al-Sakan rose (2), together with five men from the Ansār—although some say that he was actually Umāra ibn Zayd (3) ibn al-Sakan. They fought in defense of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—one after another, and were killed defending him, until the last of them was Ziyād or Umāra (4). He fought until his wounds brought him down. Then a band of Muslims rallied and drove the enemy away from him. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

‘Bring him close to me.’

They brought him close to the Prophet, who let him rest his head upon his foot. He died with his cheek upon the foot of the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”

He (5) said: “Āsim ibn Umar ibn Qatāda related to me that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—shot with his bow (6) until its tip (7) broke. Qatāda ibn al-Nu‘mān took the bow, and it remained in his possession. That day, Qatāda ibn al-Nu‘mān’s eye was struck and fell onto his cheek (8). Āsim ibn Umar ibn Qatāda also related to me that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—restored it with his own hand, and it became (9) the better and keener of his two eyes.” (10)

(1) “A man” is omitted from S and B. (2) After the word “himself,” *Sīrat Ibn Hishām* contains several phrases filling one line that Ibn Taymiyya did not quote. (3) Ibn Hishām reads: “ibn Yazīd.” (4) N, M, and S read: “Ziyād ibn Umāra.” (5) That is, Ibn Ishāq, as cited in *Sīrat Ibn Hishām*, 3/87. (6) M reads: “He shot from his bow with his own hand.” (7) The *siya* is the tip of a bow. (8) N, M, and S read: “his two cheeks.” (9) Ibn Hishām reads: “and it became.” (10) Ibn Hajar cited this report in his biographical entry on Qatāda ibn al-Nu'mān in *al-Isāba*, 3/217, and stated that the incident occurred during the Battle of Badr. He then said: “Other lines of transmission report that his eye was injured on the day of Uhud. Al-Dāraqutnī and Ibn Shāhīn transmitted this through Abd al-Rahmān ibn Yahyā al-Udhrī, from Mālik, from Āsim ibn Umar ibn Qatāda, from Mahmūd ibn Labīd, from Qatāda ibn al-Nu'mān, who reported that his eye was injured on the day of Uhud and fell onto his cheek. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—put it back, after which it became the healthier of his two eyes. Al-Dāraqutnī and al-Bayhaqī also transmitted it in *al-Dalā'il* through Iyād ibn Abd Allāh ibn Abī Sarh, from Abū Sa'īd al-Khudrī, from Qatāda, who reported that his eye was dislodged on the day of Uhud. He came to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—who put it back, and it returned to its proper position. Ibn Ishāq related it at length from Āsim ibn Umar ibn Qatāda as a *mursal* report.”
