The Rāfidī said (1): “He was supremely intelligent (2), intensely eager to learn, and constantly kept company, night (3) and day, with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)—the most perfect of mankind—from childhood until the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) passed away.”

The response is: How does he know that Alī was more intelligent than Umar and Abū Bakr, that he was more eager for knowledge than they were, or that he learned more from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) than they did?

It is recorded in the two Sahihs that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:

“Indeed, among the nations before you there were men granted inspiration. If there should be any such person in my nation, it is Umar.” (4)

A person granted inspiration is one whom Allah inspires, and this is a degree beyond instruction by human beings.

It is also recorded in the two Sahihs that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:

“I saw as though I had been brought some milk. I drank from it until I saw the signs of having drunk my fill emerging from my fingernails. Then I handed what remained to Umar.”

They asked, “How did you interpret it?”

He replied, “Knowledge.” (5)

No similar report has been narrated concerning Alī.
