grant him peace): ‘Whoever sets himself against Alī over the caliphate is (1) an unbeliever; he has waged war against Allah and His Messenger. Whoever harbors doubt concerning Alī is an unbeliever.’”
It is also narrated from Anas that he said: “I was with the Prophet (2) (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). He saw Alī approaching and said, ‘This man and I are Allah’s proof against my community on the Day of Resurrection.’”
Muāwiyah ibn Haydah al-Qushayrī said: “I heard the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) say to Alī, ‘Whoever dies while hating you (3) . . . dies as a Jew or a Christian.’”
The answer may be given in several ways:
First: The report must be authenticated—and even this is only for the sake of argument (4). The mere fact that al-Muwaffaq, the preacher of Khwarazm, narrated it does not establish that the hadith was truly spoken by the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). This would be so even if the lies and fabrications contained in the hadiths he compiled were not already known. Yet whoever examines what (5) is contained in this preacher’s compilation will say: “Glory be to You! This is a monstrous slander.”
Second: Everyone with knowledge of hadith bears witness that these hadiths are lies fabricated against the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) (6).
