one hadith master, bringing together the transmission routes of the various narrations of the Hadith of the Bird for comparative examination and study. Among them were al-Hākim al-Naysābūrī, Abū Nuʿaym, and Ibn Mardawayh.
Al-Hākim was asked about the Hadith of the Bird, and he replied, “It is not authentic.” (1)
(1) In the preceding note, I cited al-Shawkānī’s remarks, including his statement that al-Hākim had declared the hadith authentic, and so forth. The hadith is found in al-Hākim’s *al-Mustadrak*, 3:130–131, as a report from Anas. It includes the words: “A roasted chick was presented to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace…” Al-Hākim then said: “This hadith is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, though neither of them included it. More than thirty of Anas’s companions narrated it from him. Reports from ʿAlī, Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, and Safīna have also been established as authentic. Thābit al-Bunānī’s report from Anas contains additional wording, as narrated to us in Kufa from his original manuscript by the reliable and trustworthy Abū al-Qāsim al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn ʿAliyya ibn Khālid al-Sakūnī…” Al-Dhahabī commented on al-Hākim’s words: “I say: I do not know Ibn ʿIyād. For a long time, I thought that al-Hākim had not dared to include the Hadith of the Bird in his *Mustadrak*. But when I annotated this book, I encountered a horrifying array of fabricated reports in it; by comparison, the Hadith of the Bird towers above them.”
