‘When the Day of Mutual Imprecation came (1), the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—established bonds of brotherhood between the Emigrants and the Helpers. Ali (2) was standing there, seeing and recognizing him (3), yet the Prophet did not establish a bond of brotherhood between him and anyone. He therefore went away weeping (4).
The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—asked, “What has become (5) of Abū al-Hasan?”
They replied, “He went away with tears in his eyes (6).”
[He said, “Bilāl, go and bring him to me.” So he went to him and entered his home with tears in his eyes.] (7)
Fātima asked him, “Why are you weeping (8)?”
He replied, “The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—established bonds of brotherhood between the Emigrants and the Helpers, but did not establish (9) a bond of brotherhood between me and anyone.”
She said, “May Allah not disgrace (10) you. Perhaps he has merely reserved you (11) for himself.”
Bilāl then said, “O Ali, answer the summons of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.” Ali came, and the Prophet asked, “Why are you weeping (12), Abū al-Hasan?” Ali told him what had happened.
He said, “I have reserved you (13) solely for myself. Would it not please you
