rather, it is recorded in the Sahīh that “the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—died while his armor was held in pledge by a Jew against thirty wasqs (large dry measures) of barley that he had purchased for his family” (1). Thus, this debt that he owed was to be settled from the collateral he had pledged, and no other debt is known to have been owed by the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
The Sahīh also records that he said:
“My heirs will not divide (2) even a dinar or a dirham among themselves. Whatever I leave after provision for my wives and the expenses of my administrator is charity.” (3)
Had he owed any debt, it would have been paid from what he left behind, and its payment would have taken precedence over charity, as established in an authentic hadith (4).

(1) The hadith narrated from Ā'isha—may Allah be pleased with her—is found in *Sahīh al-Bukhārī*, 4/141 (Book of Jihad and Military Expeditions, chapter “What Has Been Said Concerning the Prophet…”). Its wording is: “The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—died while his armor was held in pledge by a Jew for thirty *sā'* (dry measures) of barley.” With differences in wording, the hadith also appears in *Sahīh al-Bukhārī*, 6/15 (Book of Military Expeditions, chapter “Qabīsa Narrated to Us”). The same report, with differences in wording, is also narrated from Ibn Abbās, Anas, and Asmā' bint Yazīd—may Allah be pleased with them—in: *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 2/344 (Book of Sales, chapter “The Concession Allowing Purchase on Deferred Payment”); *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 2/344 (Book of Sales, chapter “The Concession Allowing Purchase on Deferred Payment”); *Sunan al-Nasā'ī*, 7/367 (Book of Sales, chapter “Transactions with the People of the Book”); *Sunan Ibn Mājah*, 2/815 (Book of Pledges, chapter “Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shayba Narrated to Us”); and *al-Musnad* (al-Ma'ārif ed.), nos. 2109, 2724, 2743, and 3409; (al-Halabī ed.), 3/102 and 6/453, 457.

(6) The word “hadith” is omitted from K. In the margin of M, beside this passage, is written: “A discussion refuting those who maintain that a bond of brotherhood was established between the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and Alī—may Allah be pleased with him.”
