The believers, in turn, show loyalty to Allah and His Messenger—the loyalty (1) that stands opposed to enmity. This is true of every believer. Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—is therefore among those believers who are loyal to the believers and to whom the believers are loyal in return.
This hadith affirms Alī’s inward faith and attests that he deserves loyalty both inwardly and outwardly. This refutes (2) what (3) his enemies among the Kharijites and Nasibis say about him. It does not, however, state that the believers have no mawlā other than him. How could that be, when the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—has mawālī (4), namely the righteous believers? It follows with even greater force that Alī likewise has mawālī: the believers who are loyal to him.
The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—also said:
- “Indeed, Aslam, Ghifār, Muzaynah, Juhaynah, Quraysh, and the Ansār have no mawlā other than Allah and His Messenger.” (5) He thereby made them mawālī of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—* (6), just as the righteous believers were made his mawālī; they, in turn, have Allah and His Messenger as their mawlā.
