of trustworthy transmitters whatsoever. As for all the other hadiths to which the Rāfidah (1) appeal, they are fabricated. Anyone with even the slightest knowledge (2) of reports and their transmission (3) knows this.”
If it is objected:
Ibn Hazm did not mention the Prophet’s statement found in the two Sahīh collections, “You are from me, and I am from you” (4), or the hadith of mutual invocation of Allah’s curse (5), or the hadith of the cloak (6).
The reply is:
Ibn Hazm meant the authentic hadiths in which only Alī is mentioned. Those reports, by contrast, mention others as well. The Prophet said (7) to Ja'far, “You resemble me in appearance and character” (8), and he said to Zayd, “You are our brother and our freedman” (9). The hadith of mutual invocation of Allah’s curse and the hadith of the cloak both (10) mention Alī, Fātimah, Hasan, and Husayn—may Allah be pleased with them. Thus, this is not a valid objection to Ibn Hazm.
We offer a twofold answer: If the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—did not say it, there is nothing to discuss. If he did say it (11), he certainly did not mean by it that Alī was to hold the caliphate after him, since nothing in the wording indicates that. A matter of such magnitude would have to be conveyed with unmistakable clarity.
