Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said to Ibn Umar:

“Indeed, Abd Allah is a righteous man—if only he would pray at night.”

Thereafter, he did not sleep at night(1).

He also said of Usāma ibn Zayd:

“He is one of the righteous among you, so treat him well.”(2)

As for his statement:

“There are many verses bearing this meaning”(3),

at most, what he omitted would merely be of the same kind as what he cited. What he has cited is the sum and substance of their case, and the door to lying can never be shut. This is why some people would counter their lies with whatever lies they themselves could devise(4). But Allah hurls truth against falsehood and crushes it, whereupon it vanishes. Woe to the liars for what they ascribe.

(1) This is part of a lengthy hadith narrated from Ibn Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—that appears in several places in *al-Bukhārī*, including 9:40 and 40–41 (Book of Dream Interpretation, chapters “Safety and the Dissipation of Fear” and “Being Taken to the Right in a Dream”). At the first location, it begins: “Some men among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—used to have dreams during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and would relate them to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace…” The hadith also appears in *al-Bukhārī* with different wording and in a different narrative at 2:69 (Book of the Night Prayer, chapter “The Merit of One Who Awakens at Night and Prays”). It is also found in Muslim, 4:1927–1928 (Book of the Merits of the Companions, chapter “Some of the Merits of Abd Allah ibn Umar”), where it begins: “What an excellent man Abd Allah is—if only he would pray at night”; *Sunan Ibn Mājah*, 2:1291 (Book of Dream Interpretation); and *al-Musnad*, Maārif ed., 9:148–150, no. 6330. (2) The hadith, narrated by Sālim from his father, Ibn Umar—may Allah be pleased with them both—is found in Muslim, 4:1884–1885 (Book of the Merits of the Companions, chapter “The Merits of Zayd ibn Hāritha and Usāma ibn Zayd…”). Its text reads: “If you criticize his appointment as commander [meaning Usāma ibn Zayd], you had previously criticized his father’s appointment as commander. By Allah, he was indeed well qualified for it; by Allah, he was indeed the dearest of all people to me; by Allah, this man is indeed well qualified for it [meaning Usāma ibn Zayd]; and by Allah, he was indeed among those dearest to me after him. I therefore commend him to your care, for he is one of the righteous among you.” (3) N and M read: “There are many verses concerning what we have mentioned”; S reads: “And there are many verses concerning what we have mentioned.” (4) N and S read: “For this reason, some people would fight at their side with whatever lies they could devise”; M reads: “For this reason, some people would combat what they had with whatever lies they could devise.” All of this is a corruption of the text.
