Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

Third:

The Quran states that He said:

“Am I not your Lord?” They replied, “Yes indeed.”

There is no mention in it of either the Prophet or the commander. It also contains His words:

“Or lest you should say, ‘It was only our forefathers who associated others with Allah before us, and we were merely their descendants after them.’”

[Surah al-Arāf: 173]

This indicates that it was solely a covenant of tawhīd; it contained no covenant of prophethood, so how could it contain a covenant concerning anything below that?

Fourth:

The well-known hadiths on this subject—those found in the Musnad, the Sunan, the Muwatta (1), works of tafsīr, and other sources—contain nothing of the sort. Had this been mentioned in the original account, it would not have been overlooked by everyone and reported only by someone whose truthfulness is unknown; rather, the report is known to be false.

Fifth:

Since the covenant was exacted from all the descendants, it would necessarily follow that Alī was commander over all the prophets, from Noah to Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. This is the talk of madmen, for those prophets died before Allah created Alī. How, then, could he be their commander?

At most, he could have been commander over the people of his own time. As for being commander over those created before him and those who would be created after him, this is one of the lies told by someone who neither understands what he says nor feels ashamed of what he says. (2)

Astonishing indeed is this Rāfidī ass, who (3) is even more asinine than the sensible among the Jews, concerning whom Allah said:

“The likeness of those who were entrusted with the Torah but then failed to uphold it is that of a donkey carrying books.”

[Surah al-Jumua: 5]

The common people are excused for

(1) M reads: “the Sunan and similar works.” (2) S reads: “and he feels no shame in what he says”; B reads: “and he feels no shame about what he says.” (3) The word *alladhī* (“who/which”) is absent from B.
