Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

He also said in the Sahih (1): “I wish I had seen my brothers.”

They asked, “Are we not your brothers, O Messenger of Allah?”

He replied, “No. You are my Companions. My brothers, however, are people who will come after me and believe in me without having seen me.” (2) In other words, you possess a more particular form of brotherhood—namely, companionship—whereas they possess brotherhood without companionship.

Allah Most High has also said, “The believers are but brothers” [Surah al-Hujurāt: 10].

And he—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “Do not sever ties with one another, turn your backs on one another, hate one another, or envy one another. O servants of Allah, be brothers.” It is recorded in the two Sahih collections (3).

He also said, “A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim: he neither wrongs him nor abandons him.” (4)

And he said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, none of you believes until he loves for his brother the good that he loves for himself.” (5)

(1) (1) N and M read: “He said, and also in the Sahih”; S reads: “He said: and in the Sahih”; and B reads: “And in the Sahih.” The reading I have adopted is probably correct. (2) This hadith was cited above at 7/77. (3) This hadith, with variations in wording, is narrated from Anas ibn Mālik—may Allah be pleased with him—in *al-Bukhārī*, 8/19, 21 (Book of Manners, chapter on the prohibition of mutual envy and turning away from one another; chapter on forsaking others and the Messenger of Allah’s statement, “It is not lawful for a man to forsake his brother for more than three days”); *Muslim*, 4/1983 (Book of Virtue, Maintaining Ties, and Manners, chapter on the prohibition of mutual envy and hatred). A hadith with the same meaning is narrated from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—in *al-Bukhārī*, 8/19 (at the location cited above), and *Muslim*, 4/1985–1986 (Book of Virtue, chapter on the prohibition of suspicion and spying). The hadith of Anas—may Allah be pleased with him—is also recorded in *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 4/383 (Book of Manners, chapter concerning one who forsakes his Muslim brother), as well as in *al-Tirmidhī*, *Ibn Mājah*, *al-Musnad*, and *al-Muwatta’*. (4) M reads: “nor does he insult him.” The hadith with this wording is narrated from Abd Allāh ibn Umar—may Allah be pleased with them both—in *al-Bukhārī*, 9/22 (Book of Compulsion, chapter on a man swearing to his companion that he is his brother); *Muslim*, 4/1996 (Book of Virtue, chapter on the prohibition of injustice); *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 4/376–377 (Book of Manners, chapter on brotherhood); and *al-Musnad*, al-Ma‘ārif ed., 8/46. (5) This hadith, with variations in wording, is narrated from Anas ibn Mālik—may Allah be pleased with him—in *al-Bukhārī*, 1/12 (Book of Faith, chapter: “It Is Part of Faith to Love for One’s Brother What One Loves for Oneself”), where it begins: “None of you believes…”; *Muslim*, 1/67–68 (Book of Faith, chapter on the evidence that this is one of the qualities of faith); *Sunan Ibn Mājah*, 1/26 (Introduction, chapter on faith); and *al-Musnad*, al-Halabī ed., 3/176, 206, 251.
