Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

Sixth: The verse is unrestricted and does not apply specifically to any particular person. Rather, every believing man is commanded to pray with those who pray. It has also been said that what is meant is congregational prayer (1), because one catches a unit of prayer only by joining the bowing.

Seventh: If what were meant were bowing (2) with the two of them, the verse’s ruling would have ceased upon their deaths (3), with the result that no one would be commanded to bow with those who bow.

Eighth: The assertion that [Alī] (4) was the first person to pray with the Prophet (5)—peace and blessings be upon him—is not conceded. Rather, most people maintain the contrary, namely that Abū Bakr prayed before him (6).

Ninth: Even if it were a command to bow with him, that would not establish that the person with whom one bows is thereby the imam. For when Alī was with the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—Alī was not the imam, although he bowed with him.
