Second: This is a fabricated lie, by the consensus of hadith experts (1).
Third: This is categorically false, for it would entail (2) that Alī is superior to Abraham and Muhammad, since he is in the middle while they are on either side. Abraham and Muhammad are the best of creation; whoever regards Alī as superior to them is more unbelieving than the Jews and Christians.
Fourth: It is established in the two Sahīh collections that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“The first to be clothed on the Day of Resurrection will be Abraham” (3).
It makes no mention of Muhammad or Alī. The fact that Abraham will be clothed first does not entail that he is superior to Muhammad in every respect (4), just as in his words:
“The people will be struck unconscious on the Day of Resurrection, and I shall be the first to regain consciousness. I will then find (5) Moses holding fast (6) to the Throne, and I do not know whether he regained consciousness before me or was among those whom Allah exempted” (7),
(1) I have been unable to locate this fabricated hadith.
(2) N and M read: “because it entails.”
(3) This hadith is narrated from Ibn Abbās, may Allah be pleased with them both, in al-Bukhārī, 4/139 (Book of the Prophets, chapter on the words of Allah Most High: “Allah took Abraham as an intimate friend”), and 4/168 (Book of the Prophets, chapter “And mention Mary in the Book”). It also appears elsewhere in al-Bukhārī; in Muslim, 4/2194–2195 (Book of Paradise and the Description of Its Bliss and Its Inhabitants, chapter on the Passing of This World and the Gathering on the Day of Resurrection); and in Sunan al-Tirmidhī, 5/4 (Book of Exegesis, Sūrah “The Prophets”). It appears elsewhere in al-Tirmidhī as well, and is also found in al-Nasāī, al-Dārimī, and the Musnad of Ahmad.
(4) N and M read: “superior in every respect to Muhammad.”
(5) M reads: “and my brother.”
(6) S reads: “stretching out.”
(7) This hadith is narrated from Abū Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him. It appears in al-Bukhārī in several places, the last at 9/139 (Book of Tawhīd [Monotheism], chapter on Will and Volition). It begins: “A Muslim man and a Jewish man exchanged insults...” The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then said: “Do not regard me as superior to Moses, for the people will be struck unconscious on the Day of Resurrection, and I shall be the first to regain consciousness. Then, behold, Moses will be holding fast to the side of the Throne. I do not know whether he was among those who were struck unconscious and recovered before me, or among those whom Allah exempted.” With variations in wording, the hadith also appears in Muslim, 4/1844–1845 (Book of Virtues, chapter on Some of the Virtues of Moses—may Allah bless him and grant him peace); Sunan Abī Dāwūd, 4/301–302 (Book of the Sunnah, chapter on Giving Preference among the Prophets—may blessings and peace be upon them); and al-Musnad (Maārif ed.), 14/20–22, no. 7576.
