: “Al-Thalabī stated: Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Daynawarī informed me; Mūsā ibn Muhammad ibn Alī ibn Abd Allāh narrated to us. He said: My father read before Abū Muhammad (1) ibn al-Hasan ibn Ulwiyya al-Qattān from his book while I listened: One of our companions narrated to us; a man from Egypt called Tasm narrated to us; Abū Hudhayfa narrated to us from his father, from Sufyān al-Thawrī, regarding His words:
‘He released the two seas, meeting side by side—between them is a barrier, so neither transgresses.’
He said: ‘Fātimah and Alī’; and:
‘From both emerge pearls and coral’:
‘al-Hasan and al-Husayn.’”
This chain of transmission is layers of darkness, one above another; nothing can be established through anything like it.
Its falsity is evident from several considerations:
One is that this occurs in Surah al-Rahmān, which is Meccan by Muslim consensus, whereas al-Hasan and al-Husayn were born only in Medina.
Second, calling these two “seas,” this one “a pearl” and that one “coral,” and making “released” mean marriage are interpretations that the Arabic language cannot possibly bear, either literally or metaphorically. Just as this is a lie against Allah and the Quran, it is also a lie against the Arabic language (2).
Third, there is nothing here beyond what is found among all other descendants of Adam. Whenever a man marries a woman and two children are born to them,* those two children fall into this same category. Thus, there is nothing in mentioning
