Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

such as al-Ashtar al-Nakha'ī and others like him among the men of civil strife; al-Mukhtār ibn Abī Ubayd (1) and others like him among the liars and fabricators; and al-Hajjāj ibn Yūsuf and others like him among the people of injustice and evil.

Alī is not the best member of the household. Rather, the best member of the household is the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—for he is himself included among its members. Thus, he said to al-Hasan:

“Did you not know that we are a household that does not eat from charity?” (2)

This statement includes both the speaker and those with him.

Likewise, the angels said:

“May Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you, O people of the household.” [Surah Hūd: 73]

Abraham was among them.

Similarly, he said:

“O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Abraham and the family of Abraham,”

and [Abraham] (3) is included among them.

The same applies to the statement of the Most High:

“Except the family of Lot—We saved them.” [Surah al-Qamar: 34]

Lot himself was included among them.

Likewise, He said:

“Indeed, Allah chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of Imrān above all peoples.” [Surah Āl Imrān: 33]

Thus, Abraham was himself among those chosen (4).

(1) (S) and (B): “ibn Ubayd,” which is an error. (2) I have not found this hadith with this wording. The wording in al-Bukhārī, 4/74 (*Book of Jihad*, chapter “Speaking Persian and Other Foreign Languages”), narrated from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—is: “Al-Hasan ibn Alī took a date from the dates given in charity and put it in his mouth. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said in Persian, ‘Kakh, kakh! Do you not know that we do not eat from charity?’” The hadith also appears in Muslim, 2/751 (*Book of Zakāt*, chapter “The Prohibition of Zakāt for the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and His Family”). Another chain has the wording: “Charity is not lawful for us.” Muslim contains other hadiths to the same effect in this chapter, as do *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, 2/83–84, and *Sunan al-Tirmidhī*, 2/165–167. (3) “And Abraham” is absent from (N) and (S). (4) (S) and (B): “fī al-istifāiyya.”
