and Abū Bakr, Umar, and Uthmān followed him (1). It shook beneath them, so the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: ‘Stand firm, Uhud! Upon you are none but a prophet, a siddīq, and two martyrs.’” (2).
Imam Ahmad also narrated it from Yahyā ibn Sa'īd, from Qatāda, from Anas (3). According to another version, “Mount Uhud shook beneath them” (4).
In the Sahih (5), Ibn Mas'ūd reports from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—that he said:
“Adhere to truthfulness, for truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues to speak the truth and strives to be truthful until he is recorded with Allah as a siddīq. Beware of lying, for lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. A man continues to lie and pursues falsehood until he is recorded with Allah as an inveterate liar” (6).
Fourth: Allah Most High has called Mary a siddīqa. How, then, can it be said, “There are three siddīqs”?
(1) M reads: “and with him.”
(2) This hadith appeared previously at 3/501 (ت [0 - 9]). In all its other occurrences, the wording is “Stand firm, Hirā'!” or “Be still, Hirā'!” The sole exception is no. 1638 in *al-Musnad*, al-Ma'ārif ed., 3/112, which reads: “Stand firm, Hirā'—or Uhud!”
(3) *Al-Musnad*, al-Halabī ed., 3/112, gives the following chain: “Abd Allāh narrated to us: My father narrated to me: Yahyā ibn Sa'īd narrated to us and said: Shu'ba narrated to us; Qatāda narrated to us that Anas ibn Mālik [reported it].” The hadith of Anas is also found in *Sahīh al-Bukhārī*, 5/15 (*Book of the Merits of the Prophet’s Companions*, “Chapter on the Merits of Uthmān”), where “Uhud” appears instead of “Hirā'.” Al-Albānī discussed the hadith, its various wordings, and its transmissions in detail in *Silsilat al-Ahādīth al-Sahīha*, 2/454–458 (hadith no. 875).
(4) “Uhud” is omitted from S and B. This version is found in *al-Musnad* (al-Halabī ed.), 5/331.
(5) M reads: “and in the two Sahih collections.”
(6) This hadith appeared previously at 4/266.
