Minhaj as-SunnahIbn Taimiya

And among the Kufans, falsehood had become mingled with truth. Thus, the lie or error of one of them might escape later scholars, yet be identified through other evidence.

How much more so in this case, when Ahmad did not narrate this hadith—neither in the Musnad nor in the book al-Fadā’il (Virtues). Rather, it is one of al-Qutay'ī’s additions (1). He narrated it (2) from Muhammad ibn Yūnus al-Qurashī: al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Ansārī narrated to us (3); Amr (4) ibn Jumay narrated to us; Ibn Abī Laylā narrated to us (5), (6 from his brother, from Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Laylā (6) 6) [from his father] (7), who said: “The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said…” He then related the report (8).

(1) N reads: “al-Qa'nanī”; M and B read: “al-Qa'yanī”; and S reads: “al-Qa'yanī.” I have deemed the correct reading to be “al-Qutay'ī.” Al-Qa'nabī was Abu Abd al-Rahmān Abd Allah ibn Maslama ibn Qa'nab al-Qa'nabī al-Hārithī, who died in 221 AH. Al-Bukhārī and Muslim narrated from him, but he made no additions to the *Musnad* or to any of Ahmad’s works, and his biographical notice mentions no connection between him and Ahmad. See *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb*, 6/31–33; *al-A'lām*, 4/280–281. Al-Qutay'ī, however, was Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ja'far ibn Hamdān ibn Mālik al-Qutay'ī, who made the additions to *Fadā'il al-Sahāba* (Virtues of the Companions). Ibn Taymiyya will mention him shortly, saying: “Al-Qutay'ī also narrated it through another route.” Al-Qutay'ī was born in 273 AH and died in 368 AH. See his biography in *Tabaqāt al-Hanābila*, 2/6–7; *Tārīkh Baghdād*, 4/73–74; and *al-A'lām*, 1/103. (2) *Fadā'il al-Sahāba*, 2/627–628, no. 1072. (3) *Fadā'il al-Sahāba* reads: “Muhammad narrated to us; al-Hasan ibn Abd al-Rahmān al-Ansārī narrated to us.” (4) S reads: “Umar.” (5) *Fadā'il al-Sahāba* reads: “He said: Amr ibn Jumay narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Laylā.” (6) The passage between the two (6) markers is omitted from S and B. In *Fadā'il al-Sahāba* it reads: “from his brother Īsā, from Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Laylā.” (7) The words “from his father” are omitted from N, S, and B. (8) Dr Wasī Allah ibn Muhammad Abbās states in his annotation: “It is fabricated because of Amr ibn Jumay, Abu al-Mundhir—also said to be Abu Uthmān—for he is *matrūk* (a rejected transmitter). Ibn Ma'īn declared him a liar; al-Nasā'ī and al-Dāraqutnī said, ‘Matrūk’; and Ibn Adī said, ‘He was suspected of fabricating hadith.’” See the remainder of the annotation.
