[Section: The Twenty-Fourth Proof—“O Prophet, Allah is sufficient for you and for the believers who follow you”—and the Response to It]

Section

The Rāfidī(1) said:

“The twenty-fourth proof is the saying of Allah Most High:

‘O Prophet, Allah is sufficient for you and for the believers who follow you.’

[Surah al-Anfāl: 64]

It is narrated through Abū Nu‘aym that he said, ‘It was revealed concerning ‘Alī(2).’ This is a virtue attained by none of the Companions besides him; therefore, he is the Imam.”

The response may be given from several angles:

First, its authenticity is denied.

Second, this statement does not constitute proof.

Third, it may be said that this assertion(3) is one of the gravest fabrications against Allah and His Messenger. This is because His words:

“Allah is sufficient for you and for the believers who follow you”

[Surah al-Anfāl: 64]

mean that(4) Allah is sufficient for you and sufficient for the believers who follow you. He alone suffices you and the believers who are with you(5).

This is like the Arabs’ saying, “A dirham will suffice for you and Zayd.”

Of the same kind are the poet’s words:

An Indian-forged sword will suffice for you and al-Dahhāk.
