[Section: The Tenth Proof—“Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance”—and the Response to It]
Section. The Rāfidī (2) said:
“The tenth proof is the saying of Allah Most High: ‘Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance’ [Surah al-Baqara: 37]. [The jurist] (3) Ibn al-Maghāzilī (4), a scholar of the Shāfiī school, narrated through his chain of transmission from Ibn Abbās, who said: ‘The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was asked about the words that Adam (5) received from his Lord, whereupon He accepted his repentance. He replied, “Adam asked Him, by the right of Muhammad, Alī, Fātima, al-Hasan, and al-Husayn, to accept his repentance (6), and so He accepted his repentance.”’ This is a virtue in which no Companion equaled him. He is therefore the Imam, because he stands equal to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—in being used as a means of approach to Allah Most High.”
The response may be given in several ways:
