of dust in his hand, then said, “Yes (1), I do say that, and you (2) are one of them.” Allah veiled him from their sight, so they could not see him (3). … He did not leave a single man among them without putting (4) dust on his head. Then he departed (5) for his intended destination.

Someone who had not been with them then came and asked, “What are you waiting for here?”

They replied (6), “Muhammad.”

He said, “May Allah confound you! By Allah, Muhammad has already passed right by you. He did not leave a single man among you without putting dust on his head, and then went about his business (7). Can you not see what has happened to you (8)?”

He continued: Each man placed his hand on his head and found dust upon it. They then began peering inside (9) and saw Ali lying on the bed, covered (10) with the mantle of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

They said, “By Allah, this is surely Muhammad, asleep with a mantle over him.” They remained there in that state until morning. Then Ali rose from the bed, and they said, “By Allah, the man who informed us had indeed told us the truth (11).”

Among what Allah revealed [of the Quran] that day (12) was: “

(1) “Yes” does not appear in *Sīrat Ibn Hishām*. (2) (N), (S), and (B) read: “and you.” (3) Following the phrase “so they could not see him,” *Sīrat Ibn Hishām* contains three lines that Ibn Taymiyya abridged. (4) (M) reads: “except that Allah placed upon…” *Sīrat Ibn Hishām* reads: “except that he had placed upon…” (5) (N) reads: “they departed.” (6) (S) and (B) read: “They said.” (7) (M) reads: “Then he departed and went about his business”; (S) and (B) read: “and went about his business.” (8) (M) reads: “in front of you.” (9) *Sīrat Ibn Hishām* reads: “looking intently.” (10) *Sīrat Ibn Hishām* reads: “wrapped up.” (11) (M) reads: “By Allah, the one who had informed us has indeed told us the truth.” *Sīrat Ibn Hishām* reads: “By Allah, the one who informed us had indeed told us the truth.” (12) (N), (S), and (B) read: “Among what Allah revealed that day was…” *Sīrat Ibn Hishām*, 2/128, reads: “Ibn Ishāq said: Among the Quran that Allah Almighty revealed concerning that day and what they had agreed to do against him was…”

مِنْ تُرَابٍ فِي يَدِهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: نَعَمْ (١) أَنَا أَقُولُ ذَلِكَ، أَنْتَ (٢) أَحَدُهُمْ. وَأَخَذَ اللَّهُ عَلَى أَبْصَارِهِمْ عَنْهُ، فَلَا يَرَوْنَهُ (٣) . . . وَلَمْ يَبْقَ مِنْهُمْ رَجُلًا إِلَّا وَضَعَ عَلَى (٤) رَأْسِهِ تُرَابًا، ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ (٥) إِلَى حَيْثُ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ، فَأَتَاهُمْ آتٍ مِمَّنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ مَعَهُمْ فَقَالَ: مَا تَنْتَظِرُونَ هَاهُنَا؟ قَالُوا (٦) : مُحَمَّدًا. قَالَ: خَيَّبَكُمُ اللَّهُ! قَدْ وَاللَّهِ خَرَجَ عَلَيْكُمْ مُحَمَّدٌ، ثُمَّ مَا تَرَكَ مِنْكُمْ رَجُلًا إِلَّا وَقَدْ وَضَعَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ تُرَابًا، وَانْطَلَقَ لِحَاجَتِهِ (٧) ، أَفَمَا تَرَوْنَ مَا بِكُمْ (٨) ؟ قَالَ: فَوَضَعَ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ يَدَهُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ، فَإِذَا عَلَيْهِ تُرَابٌ، ثُمَّ جَعَلُوا يَطَّلِعُونَ (٩) فَيَرَوْنَ عَلِيًّا عَلَى الْفِرَاشِ مُسَجَّى (١٠) بِبُرْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ -، فَيَقُولُونَ: وَاللَّهِ إِنَّ هَذَا لَمُحَمَّدٌ نَائِمًا، عَلَيْهِ بُرْدَةٌ. فَلَمْ يَبْرَحُوا كَذَلِكَ حَتَّى أَصْبَحُوا. فَقَامَ عَلِيٌّ عَنِ الْفِرَاشِ، فَقَالُوا: وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ كَانَ صَدَقَنَا الَّذِي كَانَ حَدَّثَنَا (١١) وَكَانَ مِمَّا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ [مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ] ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ (١٢) : {

(١) نَعَمْ: لَيْسَتْ فِي " ابْنِ هِشَامٍ ". (٢) ن، س، ب: وَأَنْتَ. (٣) بَعْدَ عِبَارَةِ فَلَا يَرَوْنَهُ تُوجَدُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَسْطُرٍ فِي " ابْنِ هِشَامٍ " اخْتَصَرَهَا ابْنُ تَيْمِيَةَ. (٤) م: إِلَّا وَضَعَ اللَّهُ عَلَى. . . ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: إِلَّا قَدْ وَضَعَ عَلَى. . . (٥) ن: انْصَرَفُوا. (٦) س، ب: فَقَالُوا. (٧) م: ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَانْطَلَقَ لِحَاجَتِهِ، س، ب: وَانْطَلَقَ إِلَى حَاجَتِهِ. (٨) م: أَمَامَكُمْ. (٩) ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: يَتَطَلَّعُونَ. (١٠) ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: مُتَسَجِّيًا. (١١)) م: وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ صَدَقَنَا الَّذِي كَانَ حَدَّثَنَا، ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ كَانَ صَدَقَنَا الَّذِي حَدَّثَنَا. (١٢)) ن، س، ب: وَكَانَ مِمَّا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ، ابْنُ هِشَامٍ ٢/١٢٨: قَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: وَكَانَ مِمَّا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ، وَمَا كَانُوا أَجْمَعُوا لَهُ.
